- Teach Like a Champion by Doug Lemov
- Concrete, mostly in-class techniques to make you a better teacher. Doug Lemov has gained recognition recently for his work in putting together the Uncommon Schools' Taxonomy of Effective teaching, a video compilation of great teachers using effective techniques. This book is the on-paper version of the taxonomy videos - a DVD is included.
- Making Learning Whole by David Perkins
- Perkins uses a Little League analogy for how teaching and learning should be approached. His argument is that, too often, we treat school disciplines as things to be learned piece by agonizing piece, without regard (much less practice) of the larger "game" we are building toward. He provides useful strategies for teachers to make learning more meaningful and powerful for students.
- Made to Stick by Chip Heath and Dan Heath
- Chip and Dan Heath discuss principles that - as the title suggests - stick in audiences' brains. Much of this book (e.g. the suggestion to strip ideas down to their essential cores) is directly relevant to teaching.
- Benchmarks for Science Literacy developed by Project 2061
- Formative Assessment and Standards Based Grading by Robert Marzano
